Timing belt changes are one thing that are not to be neglected. Nissan engines with timing belts are all interference-type engines. This means that should the timing belt break while the engine is running or being started, the valves will not clear the pistons. Usually, the result of such a break is catastrophic, giving you a very large repair bill.

So, here are the timing belt change intervals for some common Nissan engines:

Engine Type / Recommended Change Interval

1.5L / No recommended interval (assume 60,000)

1.6L SOHC
1985 & prior: / No recommended interval
1986-93 / 60,000 mi
1994-98+ / 105,000 mi

1.6L DOHC / 60,000 Mi.

1.7L Diesel
1985 & prior / No recommended interval
1986-93 / 60,000 mi
1994-98+ / 105,000 mi

1.8L DOHC / 60,000 Mi.

2.0L
1985 & prior / No recommended interval
1986-93 / 60,000 mi
1994-98+ / 105,000 mi

VG30 3.0L SOHC
1984-93 / 60,000 mi
1994-98+ / 105,000 mi

VG30 3.0L DOHC
1993 & prior / 60,000 mi
late 1993+ non-turbo / 105,000
